Strand railway station

Strand Railway Station, located in the Western Cape, was officially inaugurated on 16 December 1905 as the terminus of a short branch line extending from Van der Stel station in Somerset West. This branch formed part of the wider Overberg railway network, which had been progressively expanding eastward from Cape Town since the late 1800s in an effort to connect more remote parts of the province by rail.

A photograph dated circa 1899 shows the Strand Railway Station with horse-drawn carriages gathered in front of the building, indicating that a station structure may have already been present at the site prior to its official opening. This raises the possibility that the station may have been in informal or limited use before its formal commissioning. Alternatively, the date attributed to the photograph could be approximate or incorrect. Regardless, the image provides valuable insight into the early transport infrastructure and the historical context of rail development in the region.
